If yes: YEA!!! I love meeting other Nanos!
If no: You are about to find out.
NanoWrimo is the short form for National Novel Writing Month. It is an event that goes on world wide every November since 1999. Writers, bestsellers and aspiring novelists alike, all attempt to write a 50,000 word, 75 page novel. Authors I know who are participating this month are Maureen Johnston (13 Little Blue Envelopes) and John Green (Paper Towns).
And, of course, me and my family.
Now, I know what you're thinking: something along the lines of 'You're insane! 50,000 words! In 30 days! What makes you think you can do that?'
Well, I love writing. I always have and I even have a little flash drive filled with the scribblings of a 13 year old self to the more poised (although no lessed crazed) 17 year old self.
And, if you really think about it, 50,000 words isn't that much. If you break it down, that's only 1,669 words a day, which roughly translates into 3 pages. I can do that in 2 hours, if I'm focusing, and I'm not even an accomplished typist.
So, I decided to take on the challenge to finish a novel in 30 days. And, so far, I'm pretty happy with my work. Sure, it's not going to win any awards for high class literature, but it's fun and I love it.
So, next year, when November rolls around, think about taking on the challenge of NanoWrimo. Or, if you're feeling ambitious, start now. We're only 5000 words in. 45,000 to go.
See ya in Book Club,
RM
